Overview
Jona was a former municipality in the See-Gaster area of the canton St. Gallen in Switzerland. Situated on the eastern shore of the upper section of Lake Zurich, the locality formed a suburban and lakeside complement to the adjacent historic town of Rapperswil. On 1 January 2007 the two municipalities merged to create the combined municipality known today as Rapperswil-Jona.
Geography and parts
The former municipal area included lakeshore zones, small rivers and mixed agricultural and residential land. The area takes its name from the Jona river, a modest stream that flows into the lake near Rapperswil. The former municipality comprised several villages and localities along the lake and slightly inland; these settlements created a mix of built-up neighbourhoods and green corridors that contribute to the region's suburban character.
History and development
Historically the Jona valley and lakeside have been inhabited since ancient times because of fertile land and water access. Over centuries the locality developed as a collection of villages and industries tied to agriculture, small manufacturing and later service-oriented activities linked to the nearby town of Rapperswil. The formal administrative merger in 2007 unified local government and planning under the single municipal administration of Rapperswil-Jona.
Economy, transport and daily life
Before and after the merger the area served primarily as a residential and commercial zone with local shops, crafts and businesses. It benefits from regional transport connections by road and rail that link it to larger urban centres, making it attractive for commuters. Lakefront areas and nearby recreational opportunities also support local leisure and tourism activities.
Culture and notable facts
While Rapperswil supplies the medieval old town and castle most often associated with visitors, the former municipality of Jona contributed lakeside open spaces, village churches and riverside paths. The name and identity of Jona continue to be used informally within the larger municipality and in local place names, preserving a distinct local heritage within the combined administration.
