History and development

Quaregnon's modern development was shaped by the 19th and early 20th century expansion of coal mining in the Borinage. Like many nearby towns, it experienced population growth and industrial activity tied to the mines and associated trades. Following the decline of deep coal extraction after the mid-20th century, the municipality gradually shifted toward service activities, small industry and residential redevelopment while retaining a distinct working-class heritage.

Economy, culture and community

Today the local economy combines light industry, construction, retail and public services. Community life places emphasis on local associations, cultural events and social initiatives that reflect the area's industrial past. The primary language is French, and local schools and clubs play a role in daily life. Quaregnon participates in regional planning efforts to improve housing, transport and economic opportunities.
