Overview
Pyinmana (Burmese: ပျဉ်းမနားမြို့) is a small but historically significant town in central Myanmar’s Mandalay Region. Located roughly 320 kilometres north of Yangon, it lies immediately east of the modern administrative capital, Naypyidaw. Estimates place Pyinmana’s population at around 100,000 people in the mid-2000s, though numbers have shifted since the nearby capital was established.
Geography and character
The town occupies a position on the central plain where agricultural villages, forested hills and road corridors meet. Pyinmana serves as a local market and service center for surrounding townships, with facilities that support trade, education and basic health services. Its climate is characteristic of central Myanmar, with a distinct wet season and a hot, dry season.
History and development
Pyinmana was long a modest regional town before national attention increased in 2005, when the government announced that the new administrative capital would be located nearby. On 6 November 2005 the seat of government was moved from Yangon to a purpose-built city about two miles west of Pyinmana, called Naypyidaw. That decision transformed Pyinmana’s role, turning it into a gateway and satellite community for the new capital.
Role and economy
Since the creation of Naypyidaw, Pyinmana has experienced changes in infrastructure and population movement. The town provides housing, markets and services for workers, civil servants and businesses connected to the capital region. Agriculture remains important in the surrounding countryside, while transport links — road and rail corridors that connect to larger urban centers — sustain commerce and mobility.
