Pskov: Historic City on the Velikaya River

Geography

The city lies in northwest Russia, close to the border with Estonia. Its position on the Velikaya made it a natural focal point for inland and Baltic trade routes: rivers and roads converged here, helping the settlement grow from an early fortified outpost into an urban centre.

History

Pskov has a layered past as a medieval city-state, a trading partner of Hanseatic towns, and a bulwark against western incursions. In the Middle Ages it functioned with a high degree of autonomy under its own civic assembly (veche) and princes until it was incorporated into the growing Muscovite state in the early 16th century. The city endured sieges and military campaigns over centuries, most famously resisting extended sieges during wars with neighboring powers, which shaped its defensive character.

Architecture and art

Pskov preserves an unusually large number of medieval monuments. The Pskov Krom (or Kremlin) crowns the riverbank and contains notable ecclesiastical buildings such as the Trinity Cathedral. The region developed a distinctive Pskov school of architecture — compact, austere churches and fortress works that influenced later Russian building traditions. Monasteries and parish churches still display ancient frescoes and icons dating back many centuries.
