Overview

Proussy is a small rural settlement that was until recently an independent commune. It lies in the historical region of Basse-Normandie within the Calvados department in the northwest of France. In the early 21st century it had a population of roughly 400 inhabitants, characteristic of many scattered villages in the Norman countryside.

Characteristics

The village is typical of rural Normandy: a compact village core with a parish church and stone houses, surrounded by mosaic fields, hedgerows and pasture. Local lanes and footpaths link hamlets and farms, and the area retains a largely agricultural character with small-scale farming and local services.

History and development

Proussy has roots in the long agrarian history of Normandy. Like many settlements in Calvados it evolved around farmland, local seigneurial structures and parish life. Over centuries the village adapted to changing rural economies while preserving vernacular architecture and landscape patterns.

Administration and merger

On 1 January 2016 Proussy was merged into the new commune of Condé-en-Normandie as part of a broader French initiative encouraging voluntary consolidation of small communes. This administrative reorganisation aimed to pool resources, simplify governance and maintain local services for sparsely populated areas.

Economy, culture and visiting

The local economy remains centred on agriculture, small businesses and rural tourism. Visitors are drawn by quiet lanes, traditional buildings and seasonal community events. Typical attractions include village churches, walking routes and nearby natural scenery; local markets and fêtes showcase regional food and craft.

Notable points

  • Former status: independent commune until 2016.
  • Population: small, village scale (around 400 in 2006).
