Overview
Prince Carl Philip Edmund Bertil (born 13 May 1979) is a member of the Swedish royal family with the hereditary title Duke of Värmland. He is the only son and the second child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. As a working royal he represents Sweden at public events, supports charitable causes and holds patronages, while also pursuing personal interests in design and motorsport.
Early life and succession
Carl Philip was born at the Royal Palace in Stockholm and was christened on 31 August 1979 at the palace church. At the time of his birth Sweden's Act of Succession followed male-preference rules, so he was briefly the Crown Prince. On 1 January 1980 the Swedish Act of Succession was amended to introduce absolute (equal) primogeniture, meaning that the throne would pass to the monarch's eldest child regardless of sex. After that change his elder sister, Victoria, became first in line and Carl Philip moved to second in the Swedish order of succession. Details of his birth and ducal title can be found through official royal resources such as the ducal profile and the family's biographies at official royal pages.
Family, godparents and marriage
Carl Philip is the son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. His family circle and early life included several prominent European royals as godparents. His godparents include:

- Princess Birgitta of Sweden
He married Sofia Hellqvist on 13 June 2015 in Stockholm. The couple have three sons:

Biographical and ceremonial information about his marriage and family is published in various official announcements and press materials; see royal resources such as family records and ceremonial summaries at succession and protocol pages.
Public role, interests and activities
As a prince he performs representative duties on behalf of the Swedish monarchy: attending state events, supporting cultural organisations and acting as patron for charities. Outside official work he has pursued creative and sporting interests. Carl Philip has been publicly associated with design projects and commercial collaborations as well as with motorsport at national and international levels. These activities have led to appearances at exhibitions, sporting events and public discussions on design and entrepreneurship.
Distinctive facts and context
Carl Philip's brief status as Crown Prince at birth, followed by the change to equal primogeniture, is often cited in discussions about succession law and gender equality in monarchies. His life illustrates how legal reforms can alter dynastic positions while leaving family relationships and public roles largely intact.
