Overview

Prince Frederick William (13 May 1750 – 29 December 1765) was a British prince of the House of Hanover. He was the youngest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, a grandson of George II, and a younger brother of the future monarch George III. Born into the senior royal family, his short life kept him largely out of public affairs.

Family and early life

As the baby of a large royal household, Frederick was given a princely upbringing typical of mid‑18th century Britain. He was baptized Frederick William and spent his childhood within the court establishment maintained for the children of the Prince of Wales. His older siblings included the future king and several daughters who later formed part of European dynastic networks through marriage.

Education and expected roles

Education for younger sons of the royal family usually combined private tutoring with instruction in history, languages and the arts of statecraft or, alternatively, preparation for military or ecclesiastical careers. Because Frederick died in his mid teens, he did not reach the age at which a public or military role could be assigned; consequently, he left no record of service or office.

Death and context

Prince Frederick died on 29 December 1765 at the age of fifteen. Details of his final illness and the immediate circumstances are sparsely recorded in publicly accessible sources. His early death illustrates the continuing vulnerability of children to disease and early mortality during the 18th century, even within royal households that had access to the best contemporary care.

Legacy and historical note

Because he died before adulthood, Frederick had little direct political or dynastic influence. His significance lies chiefly in genealogical and court records: he is remembered as a member of the Hanoverian royal family and as part of the generation that surrounded George III in the decades before the American and French revolutions. Contemporary portraits, baptismal entries and household accounts preserve the memory of a prince whose life was cut short.
