Overview
Ayaka Kimura (Japanese: 木村絢香; born 30 October 1981 in Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture) is a Japanese actress who first became widely known as a pop idol. She entered the public eye as a member of the Hello! Project collective and later transitioned from music to a career in acting. She is married to professional golfer Hideto Tanihara.
Early career and idol work
Kimura debuted in 1999 as part of the idol unit Coconuts Musume, which was created under the larger Hello! Project umbrella. The group was promoted with a tropical image and was one of several subunits managed by the same production team. During her time with the group she participated in recordings, live appearances and variety show promotions typical of Japanese idols in that era.
Transition within Hello! Project
Over the years the lineup of Coconuts Musume changed and by 2004 Ayaka Kimura remained as the only continuing member. She continued to appear for several more years under the combined billing "Coconuts Musume Ayaka," representing a continuity of the unit within Hello! Project even as other members departed. Her tenure with the project lasted nearly a decade, which is notable in the often-rotating world of J-pop idols.
Move to acting and name change
In 2008 Kimura formally graduated from Hello! Project to concentrate on acting. After leaving the idol collective she shifted her professional focus to television, stage and screen work, taking roles that allowed her to develop beyond her idol image. During this period she also adopted a new stage name, Nagate Ayaka (長手絢香), which she has used in her acting career.
Personal life and later activity
Her marriage to professional golfer Hideto Tanihara connected her public profile to sports circles as well as entertainment. In subsequent years she has continued to work as an actress, making appearances in a range of projects and maintaining a presence in Japanese media. She is sometimes referenced in discussions of idols who made a successful transition to acting careers.
