Overview
Portland State University is a public urban research university located in downtown Portland, Oregon. It began in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center to serve returning World War II veterans, later became Portland State College and received university status in 1969. The institution enrolls about 28,000 students and awards bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, as well as professional certificates and continuing-education programs.
Academics and research
PSU offers programs across business, engineering, education, urban planning, public affairs, social work, health professions and the arts. Faculty and research centers focus on applied work addressing metropolitan issues such as transportation systems, housing and land use, sustainability and public policy. Many degrees emphasize experiential learning, internships and community-based research that connect students with local government, nonprofits and industry partners.
Campus and community engagement
The university's urban campus enables close collaboration with city agencies and regional organizations. Facilities include classrooms, laboratories and public spaces used for outreach, continuing education and civic events. The student body includes traditional and non-traditional learners, transfer students and many who balance study with employment; access and inclusive practices are central to PSU's mission.
Governance, history and notable aspects
Governance follows the public university model with a president and governing board; past leaders have included Wim Wiewel. Portland State is often described as a hub for urban-focused scholarship and civic engagement. Athletics teams compete as the Portland State Vikings.
