Design and features

Built on a contemporary GM mid-size platform, the G6 shared many underlying components with other General Motors family cars. It was available with four-cylinder and V6 powerplants and with both manual and automatic transmissions depending on the year and trim. Standard and available equipment followed class norms: multiple airbags, anti-lock braking systems and convenience features such as power accessories, air conditioning and stereo options. Sport trims often added suspension tuning and appearance enhancements.

During General Motors' restructuring and bankruptcy process in 2009 the decision was made to discontinue the Pontiac brand; as a result the 2010 G6 became the final U.S.-built Pontiac model.

Market role and legacy

In its segment the G6 served as an accessible family car and a statement of Pontiac's then-current design direction. The convertible version was a distinguishing offering for buyers seeking an open-top mid-size vehicle directly from the factory. After production ended, the G6 remained in use in the used-car market and is remembered as the closing chapter of Pontiac's long presence in North America.
