Plateau Department (Benin)
Plateau is a southeastern department of Benin with its capital at Pobè. It includes five communes, features a tropical climate, agriculture-driven economy, and cultural ties across the Nigeria border.
The Plateau Department is one of the twelve first-level administrative divisions of the Republic of Benin. Located in the southeastern part of the country, it takes its name from the relatively elevated terrain that contrasts with coastal lowlands. The departmental capital (chef-lieu) is Pobè. Plateau functions as an important zone for local commerce and cultural exchange with neighbouring Nigeria.

Plateau occupies a band of inland territory characterized by gentle plateaus and rolling hills rather than dramatic mountain ranges. The climate is tropical, with distinct wet and dry seasons that influence planting and harvest cycles. Vegetation includes cultivated fields, patches of savanna and gallery forest along waterways. Its position near the eastern border of Benin affects patterns of trade and migration.
Administration and population
Administratively, Plateau is divided into five communes, each of which governs local arrondissements and villages. The communes are:
- Ifangni
- Adja-Ouèrè
- Kétou
- Pobè (departmental capital)
- Sakété
The department is home to several ethnic communities, including Yoruba-speaking groups and other local peoples who maintain regional languages, traditional authorities and cultural practices.
History and development
Plateau was designated as a department during Benin's administrative reorganization in the late 20th century, when the national territory was subdivided to improve local governance. Over time the department has developed modest urban centers while remaining largely rural. Towns such as Kétou have historical significance as longstanding cultural and religious centres for local communities.
Economy and transport
The local economy is largely agricultural, based on subsistence and market crops, small-scale trade and cross-border commerce with Nigeria. Road links connect Plateau's communes to neighboring departments and to border crossings, supporting the movement of goods and people. Infrastructure and public services vary between town and village areas, with ongoing efforts to improve roads, education and healthcare access.
