Geography and environment

The landscape is dominated by fertile lowlands crossed from south to north by several rivers. The Iskar, Vit and Osam rivers traverse the province, providing irrigation and shaping local valleys. The province’s northern edge lies close to the Danube and the Romanian border, giving it a transitional position between Bulgaria’s plains and the riverine corridor to the north. Pleven is historically significant for the decisive 1877 battles of the Russo-Turkish War, often called the Siege of Pleven.
