The Greeks refined orders and proportions; Roman builders adapted those forms to new materials and large-scale engineering, producing freestanding monumental columns and continuous colonnades. During the medieval and Renaissance periods pillars evolved to respond to changing structural needs and aesthetic tastes; industrial-era materials permitted taller, slimmer supports and new forms.

Uses and significance

Structurally, pillars support floors, roofs and arches, and help resist axial and lateral forces in buildings and bridges. Decoratively, they frame facades, organize interior space, and carry symbolic weight—columns mark civic or sacred importance in monuments and memorials. The term also appears metaphorically in phrases such as "pillar of the community." Modern engineering uses analysis and codes to size pillars for safety, durability and seismic performance.
