Designed by Charles Luckman and Associates in a modernist idiom, the tower rises to a roof height of 749 feet (about 228 m) and contains 52 floors of office and service space. A communications mast above the roof increases its total tip height, a distinction sometimes cited when ranking tall structures in the city. The building’s rectilinear silhouette and curtain-wall façade reflect the International Style aesthetic common to corporate towers built in the postwar era.

History and development

Built as part of a larger urban redevelopment project for Prudential Insurance, the Prudential Tower opened in 1964 and helped reframe Boston’s midtown area. The surrounding Prudential Center was developed to include arcades, shops and public plazas, integrating the tower with retail and transit links.
