Philippe Maystadt (1948–2017) — Belgian politician and finance official

Early life and academic career

Born in Verviers in the province of Liège, Maystadt trained as an economist and pursued a teaching career alongside politics. He was a professor at the Université catholique de Louvain, where he lectured on public finance and economic policy. His academic background informed his approach to fiscal management and European investment policy.

Political and governmental roles

Maystadt held a range of posts at the federal and regional level. He served as a member of both the Belgian federal parliament and the Walloon regional assembly, and he was associated with the French-speaking Christian Social Party (later renamed). From 1988 to 1998 he led Belgium's finance ministry during a period of fiscal consolidation and European economic integration.

European Investment Bank

In 2000 Maystadt became President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Union's long-term lending institution. During his presidency, which lasted until 2011, he oversaw lending programmes intended to support infrastructure, cohesion and development projects across the EU and beyond. Observers noted his emphasis on linking investment decisions to broader EU priorities.

Legacy and later years

Beyond government and the EIB, Maystadt remained active as a public intellectual and adviser on economic affairs. His career is remembered for bridging national fiscal policymaking and European-level investment policy, and for combining academic analysis with practical administration. He died on 7 December 2017 from a lung illness at age 69.
