Overview

Pennsylvania Route 274 (PA 274) is an east–west state highway located in south-central Pennsylvania. The route extends about 44 miles (71 kilometers) across primarily rural areas of Franklin and Perry counties, providing a local arterial connection between small towns, agricultural areas, and larger north–south highways. Its western terminus is at Pennsylvania Route 75 in Fannett Township, and its eastern end meets US 11/US 15 at Duncannon.

Route description

Throughout most of its length PA 274 is a two‑lane, undivided road that passes through farmland, forested hills, and small residential communities. Traveling eastward from its junction with PA 75, the highway crosses a series of ridges and valleys typical of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, then descends toward the Susquehanna River corridor where it reaches Duncannon. Near its eastern terminus it connects with the US 11/US 15 north–south route that follows the river.

Characteristics and features

  • Primary function: local and regional connector for residents, businesses, and farm traffic.
  • Physical form: mostly two lanes with occasional short turning or passing lanes in built-up areas.
  • Landscape: agricultural fields, wooded ridges, small boroughs and townships.
  • Maintenance: managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as part of the state route system.

History and development

Like many state routes in Pennsylvania, PA 274 evolved from earlier local roads that were incrementally improved and incorporated into the numbered highway network in the 20th century. Over time, the corridor has been maintained and repaved to serve changing traffic patterns, but it has retained its character as a rural route. Improvements typically focus on safety, pavement condition, and intersections with larger highways.

Uses and importance

PA 274 serves several practical roles: it links agricultural areas to market towns, provides residents with access to schools and services, and acts as a secondary route for travelers avoiding busier state and federal highways. For motorists heading to the Susquehanna River valley or transferring to US 11/US 15, the highway is a convenient east–west option. It also offers scenic drives through typical Pennsylvanian farmland and ridge landscapes.

Location and jurisdiction

The route runs entirely within two counties: Franklin County in the west and Perry County approaching Duncannon in the east. Local township and borough intersections, agricultural access points, and connector roads characterize much of PA 274’s alignment, making it an important part of the local transportation network despite its modest length.
