Overview
Pembina County lies in the northeastern corner of the U.S. state North Dakota, sharing an international boundary with the Canadian province of Manitoba. As recorded by the 2010 census (census), 7,413 people lived in the county. The county seat is Cavalier, which serves as the center for local government and many community services. The county includes agricultural plains, river valleys and scattered small towns and settlements.
Geography and environment
Pembina County's landscape is shaped by rivers and lowlands that support soils used for crop production and pasture. The area experiences a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, conditions that influence planting and harvest seasons. Native prairie remnants and riparian corridors provide habitat for wildlife, while much land is in cultivation.
History and cultural background
The region has long associations with Indigenous peoples and, later, with Métis and European fur-trade activity along the Red River corridor. The county takes its name from the Pembina River; the word "pembina" is associated with a native shrub, often translated as high-bush cranberry, reflecting local natural and linguistic ties. Settlement and county organization occurred during the nineteenth century as agriculture and transportation links developed.
Economy, communities and infrastructure
The local economy is dominated by agriculture—grain, oilseeds and livestock—and by businesses that support farming communities. Small towns and unincorporated places are linked by state and county highways, and cross-border roads and border crossings support trade and travel with Manitoba. Public services, schools and health facilities are concentrated in larger towns and in the county seat.
