Paul Shane (1940–2013) — English comedian and television actor

Early life

Shane was born in Thrybergh, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and brought up in a working-class community in England. He adopted the stage name Paul Shane early in his career. Like many entertainers of his generation he developed his craft in local clubs and on the regional theatre circuit before moving into television.

Career and notable work

Shane's breakthrough role was Ted Bovis, the lecherous but comic entertainments manager, in the BBC series that brought him national recognition. He regularly performed in television comedy, touring theatre and pantomime, and made guest appearances on a variety of programmes. His manner combined broad physical comedy with a northern theatrical delivery that audiences found affectionate and approachable.

Paul Shane was married to Dory Shane until her death in 2001; the couple had three children. Colleagues and fans recalled him for his genial stage persona and his contributions to a strand of British television comedy that celebrated character-driven humour and ensemble casts.

His work continues to be cited in retrospectives on British sitcoms of the late 20th century, and he remains a recognizable figure in discussions of regional performers who achieved national success.
