Acquaviva (literally "living water") is one of the nine communes, locally called castelli, that make up the Republic of San Marino. It is one of the smaller municipalities within the country both in area and population.

Acquaviva occupies 4.86 square kilometres (1.88 square miles) of territory. Its location places it adjacent to other Sammarinese municipalities and to the Italian region of Emilia‑Romagna. Neighbouring administrative areas include:

Population

As of 30 June 2014 the population of Acquaviva was 2,137 residents. Population figures in San Marino's castelli can fluctuate, so more recent official statistics should be consulted for current counts.

History

The territory of Acquaviva became part of the State of San Marino in 1243. Its name — "living water" — reflects local toponymy but specific historical details about early settlement and development are found in specialised regional histories and archival records.
