The castello occupies lower slopes and a narrow plain beneath the three peaks of Monte Titano. The setting makes it a natural meeting point for routes that ascend to the fortified city on the ridge.

History

The name Borgo Maggiore, literally “the larger borough,” reflects its historical role as the principal market and service settlement for the mountaintop city.
