Hammerstein wrote or co-wrote many successful stage musicals across several decades. He is particularly associated with his partnership with composer Richard Rodgers, which produced shows that remain central to the repertory of musical theatre. Their first collaboration, Oklahoma!, premiered during World War II and marked a shift toward integrating songs with plot and character.

Hammerstein died of stomach cancer in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, shortly after the Broadway opening of The Sound of Music. Contemporary writers and educators continue to study his approach to dramatic structure and lyric writing.
