Ora Namir — Israeli politician, government minister and diplomat

Political career and parliamentary service

Namir was a member of the Alignment, the Israeli Labor Party and later One Nation during her political life. She served as a member of the Knesset from 1974 until 1996, taking part in social policy debates and party politics over two decades. During that period she gained a reputation as a legislator experienced in labour and welfare matters and in coalition negotiations.

Ministerial roles

In the 1990s Namir held senior cabinet positions, notably as Minister of Labour and Social Welfare and as Minister of the Environment. Her ministerial work addressed employment policy, social safety nets and environmental regulation at a time when Israel faced both social challenges and changing economic conditions. Her appointments reflected a focus on domestic social policy and public administration.

Diplomatic service

After leaving the Knesset, Namir was appointed ambassador to China and Mongolia and served from 1996 to 2000. In this diplomatic role she represented Israeli interests, fostered bilateral contacts and promoted cultural and economic ties at a time when China’s global role was expanding. Her posting was one of the high-profile diplomatic assignments given to senior former politicians.

Legacy and death

Namir is remembered as one of Israel’s senior women in public life, notable for a long parliamentary tenure and for bridging domestic policy and international representation. She died in Tel Aviv on 7 July 2019 at the age of 88.
