Operation Nickel Grass — 1973 US strategic airlift to Israel
US strategic airlift during the 1973 Yom Kippur War delivering weapons and equipment to Israel; a key Cold War episode with lasting military and geopolitical effects.
Operation Nickel Grass was a large-scale United States military airlift carried out in October–November 1973 to resupply Israel during the Yom Kippur War. Prompted by the outbreak of fighting on October 6, the operation moved thousands of tons of ammunition, spare parts, armoured vehicles and other materiel across great distances. Between October 14 and November 14, U.S. cargo aircraft delivered roughly 22,325 tons of war materiel in a concentrated effort to restore Israeli combat capacity.

The war began with surprise offensive actions by Egyptian and Syrian forces. Those states received substantial military assistance and diplomatic backing from the Soviet Union, while Israel sought support from Western allies. As front-line losses mounted, Israel requested external supplies to sustain its forces; the United States responded with an urgent airlift under presidential authorization.
Logistics and execution
The operation relied on strategic airlift aircraft, notably C-141 Starlifters and C-5 Galaxy transports, which flew repeated sorties from U.S. bases and forward staging areas to airfields in and near the theater. The cargo included ammunition, aircraft spare parts, fuel, and heavy equipment such as tanks. Flight planning, overflight permissions and rapid ground handling were key to maintaining tempo and ensuring deliveries reached front-line units.
Execution required tight coordination between military services and allied governments to secure air routes, landing slots and onward movement. The airlift ran alongside parallel Soviet resupply efforts to Egypt and Syria, reflecting the superpower rivalry that framed the conflict.
Outcomes and consequences
Nickel Grass helped stabilize Israeli logistics during critical phases of the war and is credited with enabling countermeasures that influenced the ceasefire talks that followed. Politically and economically, U.S. support contributed to a sharp reaction from several Arab states, including an oil-export embargo that triggered a global energy shock. Diplomacy in the war’s aftermath—led by shuttle efforts known as "shuttle diplomacy"—sought disengagement and prisoner exchanges while reducing the immediate risk of wider confrontation.
Notable aspects and legacy
- It demonstrated the strategic value of rapid, long-range airlift for reinforcing allies during crises.
- The operation is often studied as an example of logistics shaping tactical and political outcomes.
- Debates endure over the operation's role in escalation, alliance politics and the subsequent regional fallout.
Operation Nickel Grass remains a reference point in military logistics and Cold War history, illustrating how air mobility, diplomacy and great-power competition can intersect in a short, consequential campaign.
