History and name

The area that became the county was organized during the late nineteenth century when the Dakota Territory was being divided into counties and townships. Over decades the county developed a distinct cultural and political character centered on the Oglala Lakota Nation. In 2015, following petitions and local votes, Shannon County adopted the name Oglala Lakota County to reflect the heritage of the reservation and its residents.

Geography and population

Oglala Lakota County covers a largely rural landscape of plains and badlands. Much of its land base lies within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where the community of Pine Ridge serves as the largest population center. According to the 2010 census, the county had 13,586 residents; the population is concentrated in small towns and numerous dispersed settlements rather than in large urban centers.
