Geography and character

New Taipei covers a broad range of landscapes, from western coastal plains to forested foothills and higher peaks to the east. The Tamsui River and several smaller rivers cross its territory, and the coastline includes headlands and bays popular for recreation. Because it encircles Taipei City, New Taipei combines dense suburban districts with more rural and scenic zones farther from the urban core.

Government and organization

The municipality is divided into multiple districts, each with local offices and responsibilities. The city hall and main administrative functions are concentrated in major districts, while elected officials manage municipal services such as transport, education, and urban planning. New Taipei was reconstituted from the former Taipei County when it was upgraded to a special municipality in 2010.

Economy, transport and daily life

New Taipei's economy mixes manufacturing, technology, commerce and tourism. Many residents commute into central Taipei by road and rail; the area is served by national highways, rail lines and extensions of the Taipei Metro. Suburban centres contain shopping, markets, schools and industrial parks that support both local and regional economies.
