Netstal is a village in the canton of Glarus in east-central Switzerland. Historically it functioned as an independent municipality (municipality) within the canton of Glarus and within the country of Switzerland. On 1 January 2011 Netstal ceased to be an independent political municipality and became part of the larger municipality of Glarus as part of a cantonal reorganisation of local government.

Geography and setting

Netstal lies in the valley of the Linth river in the Glarus region, occupying a compact area of settled land and agricultural terraces with surrounding hills. Its position in the valley gives it straightforward road and rail access to neighbouring towns and to larger urban centres further afield.

History and development

The village has roots as a local settlement tied to valley agriculture and small-scale industry. Over time it developed housing, public buildings and modest manufacturing and service enterprises that served both residents and commuters. Administrative consolidation in 2011 integrated Netstal into the municipal structure of Glarus while the village retained much of its local identity.

Economy, transport and community life

Netstal combines residential neighbourhoods with light industry and local commerce. It is served by regional transport connections that link the valley with nearby towns; these links support commuting and commerce. Community life includes local clubs, schools and facilities typical of Swiss villages, and recreational access to nearby trails and natural areas.

Notable aspects

  • Formerly an independent administrative municipality; merged into Glarus in 2011.
