Shoot

The term shoot (plural sprouts or shoots) is used to describe the part of the corm of more highly developed plants consisting of the shoot axis and leaves, usually growing above ground, a (organizational form of vascular plants). The section located directly above the ground is the shoot base.

The shoot is composed of the shoot axis and the leaves. Flowers and fruits are also shoot parts. The shoot axis is the rod-shaped part in which, in the majority of cases, there are conducting bundles for supplying the plant with water and for transporting the products of photosynthesis. It consists of several sections, the internodes, which are separated from each other by thickened areas, the nodes or nodules. The leaves are located at the nodes, protruding laterally from the shoot axis.

The shoot axis is called stem in herbaceous plants, stem, branch and twig in woody plants and rice in the juvenile stage.

Plant tubers can be either root tubers or underground shoot tubers. Subterranean shoot runners with which some plants reproduce vegetatively in the form of trellis growth are not roots.

Sometimes new growth is referred to as young shoots. The very young shoots of some vegetables that sprout from the seeds are eaten as sprouted vegetables because of their richness in vitamins and enzymes.
