KOERS. Museum van de Wielersport, known until 2018 as the Cycling Museum (WieMu), is a museum in Roeselare devoted to the history and culture of cycling. Situated in a repurposed fire station at Het Polenplein, the institution opened officially on 27 March 1998 and has since presented the evolution of the bicycle and the social phenomenon of cycling, with particular attention to Belgian and Flemish traditions.
Collections and displays
The museum's permanent and rotating displays bring together a variety of material types. Typical holdings include early bicycles and racing machines, period clothing and team jerseys, trophies and medals, historical posters and photographs, periodicals, mechanical components and workshop tools. Many exhibits are arranged to tell technical, sporting and social stories rather than following a single chronological line.
Exhibition themes and visitor experience
KOERS balances historical interpretation with visitor engagement. Exhibits often combine object labels and contextual panels with photographs, film clips and recorded oral histories. Temporary exhibitions explore focused topics—for example, training practices, legendary races, bicycle design innovations, or the local role of cycling clubs. Educational programs for schools and guided tours are part of the museum’s public outreach.
History and institutional role
The museum began its institutional life in the late 1990s when local collectors and civic organizations collaborated to preserve cycling heritage. Located in a former municipal fire station, KOERS developed both archival and curatorial capacities: it preserves documents, race programs and personal papers as well as three-dimensional objects. The museum also supports research into regional cycling history and the broader history of the bicycle.
Importance and distinctive features
KOERS occupies a notable place among cycling museums for its focus on the cultural context of road racing in a region where the sport has deep roots. It emphasizes the relationship between everyday bicycle use, amateur clubs and professional competition, illustrating how the bicycle shaped local life, identity and industry.
