Characteristics

Plants in this genus are generally slow-growing and range from flattened, nearly spineless discs to taller, columnar shapes. Most species have well-defined ribs (commonly four to eight) and areoles that produce small woolly patches rather than large spines. Flowers are typically funnel-shaped and yellow, often appearing near the crown in mature specimens. Many Astrophytum show distinctive white flecking formed by specialized hairs or scales on the epidermis.

Uses, cultivation and conservation

These cacti are widely cultivated by succulent collectors and are popular for container culture, rock gardens and grafting experiments. Common cultivation guidance includes a free-draining mix, strong light, limited watering during winter dormancy, and protection from cold and waterlogged conditions. Propagation is most often by seed; grafting and select clonal varieties are also common among growers. Some wild populations, notably of the flattened star-type species, face pressure from habitat loss and over-collection, so conservation awareness and responsible sourcing are important among enthusiasts.
