Geography and environment

The landscape of Astore includes narrow valleys, moraine and glacial features, and tributary rivers that feed larger river systems of the region. Elevations vary greatly across the district, producing distinct high‑altitude ecosystems and seasonally accessible grazing lands. Vegetation ranges from fruit trees and cultivated terraces in valley bottoms to alpine meadows higher up.

History and administration

Administratively Astore is one of the districts within Gilgit–Baltistan; it was separated from Diamir District in 2004. The district is governed from its valley towns and serves as a local centre for administration, education and basic services for surrounding rural communities. Gilgit–Baltistan itself is a semi‑autonomous territorial unit with its own local institutions.

Economy, transport and visitors

Local livelihoods are based on small‑scale agriculture, horticulture, livestock grazing and seasonal trade. In recent decades tourism has grown, with visitors attracted by trekking, nature observation and cultural experience. Roads connect Astore with other parts of Gilgit–Baltistan, although some routes are seasonal and travel can be affected by weather or snow.
