Astola Island — Pakistan’s offshore island in the northern Arabian Sea

Physical characteristics

Astola covers a small area of roughly 6.7 km2 and rises from open water as a rocky outcrop punctuated by a series of low hills — which gave rise to its local name. The shoreline is irregular with rocky shelves, tidal pools and fringing reef structures. Vegetation is sparse and adapted to arid, salty conditions; freshwater is not abundant, which helps explain why the island is not permanently inhabited.

Ecology and conservation

The island and its surrounding waters support a variety of marine life. Sea turtles, seabirds and reef-associated fish are commonly reported around Astola, and coral and algal communities occur in zones sheltered from the heaviest surf.
