Mylapore taluk, Chennai

History and formation

The taluk was created in December 2013 during a reorganisation of Chennai’s administrative boundaries. It was formed from parts of the former Fort-Tondiarpet and Perambur-Purasawalkam taluks in order to simplify local governance and improve the responsiveness of municipal and revenue offices to residents in these dense urban areas.

Geography and neighbourhoods

Mylapore taluk comprises the well-known neighbourhoods of Mylapore, Triplicane and Chintadripet. These areas lie close to Chennai’s eastern shoreline and to the city centre. Mylapore and Triplicane have long histories as cultural and religious centres, while Chintadripet is recognised as a longstanding residential and commercial enclave.

Notable places and culture

The taluk contains several important temples, churches and cultural venues that draw visitors and worshippers. Among the prominent sites commonly associated with the area are:

• Kapaleeshwarar Temple (Mylapore) and other Hindu temples important to local religious life
• Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane, a major Vaishnavite shrine
• San Thome Basilica and related Christian landmarks along the coastline
• The nearby Marina coastline and a network of traditional streets that host festivals and cultural events, including during the winter music season

Administration and services

As a taluk, Mylapore hosts taluk-level offices that handle revenue records, property and land administration, and the issuance of civic certificates such as residence and income documents. The taluk coordinates with the Chennai Corporation and district authorities on matters of public works, sanitation and local planning.

Transport and significance

Mylapore taluk is well connected by Chennai’s road network and public transport systems, making it easily accessible from other parts of the city. Its combination of historical landmarks, religious institutions and residential neighbourhoods gives the taluk an important role in Chennai’s cultural life and urban fabric.
