Moxico Province (Angola)

Geography and environment

Moxico’s terrain includes plateaus, river valleys and seasonal wetlands. Many of its rivers form part of the greater Zambezi drainage basin, and the province contains important wetland zones and lakes. One notable protected area is Cameia National Park, known for its floodplain grasslands, aquatic habitats and significant birdlife.

History and development

Historically remote and thinly inhabited, Moxico was affected by decades of conflict during the 20th century, including disruption to transport and agriculture. Since the end of large-scale hostilities the province has seen gradual reconstruction of roads, public services and demining efforts, but infrastructure and economic development remain limited in many districts.

Economy and land use

Economic activity in Moxico is dominated by subsistence farming, livestock rearing and small-scale forestry.
