Geography and environment

The terrain is largely mountainous, with slopes used for shade-grown coffee and steep ridges covered by remnant cloud forest and secondary growth. Small river basins and upland valleys support subsistence crops, while pockets of protected forest and scenic vistas attract nature tourism. Road access is concentrated along a few main corridors linking the capital with other towns and neighboring departments.

History and cultural significance

Morazán played a central role in 20th‑century Salvadoran history. During the Salvadoran Civil War it was the scene of intense fighting and civilians suffered greatly; some villages and sites in the department are now places of memory and documentation. In recent decades local communities and museums have preserved this recent past alongside older folk traditions and indigenous heritage found in rural settlements.

Economy and uses

The local economy is based on agriculture—notably coffee at higher elevations—smallholder crops, livestock and remittances from abroad. Markets in San Francisco Gotera and other municipal centers provide services, trade and artisan goods. Ecotourism, guided hikes and visits to historical museums have become increasingly important for livelihoods.
