Overview
Montgomery County is a county in the U.S. state of Illinois. Established in 1821, it had a population of 30,104 at the 2010 United States census. The county seat is Hillsboro and the largest city is Litchfield. The county is primarily rural, with a mix of small towns, farmland and corridors of transportation that link it to larger regional centers.
Geography and transportation
The county occupies a portion of central Illinois and is characterized by agricultural land, patches of woodland and small river valleys. Interstate 55 and historic U.S. Route 66 pass near or through some communities, giving the county connections to the Springfield and St. Louis regions. History
Montgomery County was organized in 1821 during the early period of Illinois statehood. Like many counties with the same name, it is named in honor of General Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War officer. Development in the 19th and early 20th centuries followed patterns of settlement, agriculture and later transportation improvements—railroads and highways—that shaped the location of towns and markets.
