Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo: Spanish journalist, explorer and youth educator

Early life and athletics

Quadra-Salcedo was born in Madrid. In his youth he pursued athletics and reached the level of an Olympic competitor, representing Spain in track and field events. His background as an athlete informed a lifelong taste for travel and outdoor activity, which later shaped the expeditions he organized for young people.

Journalism and television career

He became widely known as a correspondent and documentary-maker for Spanish television and other media. Over several decades he reported on social and cultural topics, produced travel and historical programmes, and earned a reputation for immersive on-location reporting. His work emphasized personal contact with different communities and living history rather than detached studio commentary.

Aventura 92 and the Ruta Quetzal

In the 1970s and 1980s Quadra-Salcedo created and directed an annual youth expedition originally known as Aventura 92, later widely identified with the name Ruta Quetzal. The project brought together teenagers from Spain, Latin America and elsewhere to travel, study history, archaeology and intercultural relations, and to take part in fieldwork and cultural exchange. The program blended guided exploration with classroom-style seminars and hands-on projects, and it was celebrated for fostering international understanding among young participants.

His legacy endures in the generations of students and explorers who took part in the expeditions he organized and in the style of location-based, human-centered documentary reporting he practised.
