Michael Goolaerts (1994–2018)

Early life and development

Goolaerts began riding competitively as a junior and raced frequently in Belgian regional events, where many young riders develop the endurance and bike-handling skills needed for the northern classics. He rode in amateur and U23 categories that feed into the professional peloton and earned recognition for his work ethic and ability to support team leaders in demanding races.

Professional career

Goolaerts entered the professional ranks as a stagiaire with Lotto–Soudal on 1 August 2016 and then signed with Vérandas Willems–Crelan for the 2017 season. He made his competitive debut for his new team in the Étoile de Bessèges and took part in a variety of European races, particularly early-season events and cobbled classics where his team role often involved supporting designated leaders and seeking exposure for the squad.

Racing style and role

Although not widely known for major individual victories, Goolaerts was regarded as a committed domestique and a resilient classics rider-in-development. Riders in his position typically combine endurance, bike handling over rough terrain, and the willingness to undertake long breakaways or hard pulls to benefit teammates.

Incident at Paris–Roubaix and death

During the 2018 Paris–Roubaix, one of cycling's oldest and most demanding one-day races, Goolaerts suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while on course. Medical teams attempted resuscitation at the scene and he was transferred by air ambulance to a hospital in Lille. Despite intensive efforts, he died later that day.
