Geography and settlements

Arzachena lies in the historical region of Gallura in northeastern Sardinia. Its territory extends from granite hills inland to the rocky coves and sandy bays of the Costa Smeralda. Well-known coastal hamlets within the comune include Porto Cervo, Baia Sardinia and Cannigione, which function as summer resorts and marinas. The area is appreciated for its clear waters, rocky promontories and Mediterranean maquis vegetation.

History and archaeological heritage

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Evidence of the Nuragic civilization — Bronze Age stone towers called nuraghi — is abundant, and several major sites such as the La Prisgiona complex and the nearby Tombs of the Giants illustrate this long history. Later periods brought rural communities and small medieval settlements; in the 20th century parts of the coastline were transformed into international tourism destinations.

Economy and tourism

Modern Arzachena combines traditional rural activities with a tourism-driven economy. The creation and development of the Costa Smeralda in the 1960s turned places like Porto Cervo into luxury yachting and holiday centers, attracting visitors worldwide.
