Career and main activities

Engman began his professional life in the public archives, working at the Finnish national archives in Helsinki from 1968 to 1973. He later entered academia and in 1985 was appointed professor of general history at Åbo Akademi, a Swedish-language university in Finland. He served as a subeditor of the Swedish-language journal Historisk Tidskrift för Finland from 1971 to 1982 and then as editor-in-chief from 1982 until 2000.
