Design and engineering

The GranTurismo was styled by Pininfarina and built with an emphasis on balanced handling and refined highway manners rather than uncompromising track focus. Early models were offered with naturally aspirated V8 engines in roughly 4.2 and 4.7 litre displacements; these units were developed in close technical partnership with Ferrari and were tuned for characterful exhaust note and mid-range torque. The chassis and suspension were calibrated to provide a mix of ride comfort and sharp turn-in, while stronger braking and chassis components were fitted to higher-performance variants.

Powertrain and transmissions

Throughout its lifecycle the GranTurismo used V8 petrol engines and a variety of transmissions. Gearbox options included automated-manual systems and conventional torque-converter automatics, with changes over time to improve shift quality and drivability. The package prioritized smooth, usable power delivery suitable for sustained high-speed cruising as well as spirited driving on winding roads.

Variants and editions

• Sport / S — sharper engine tuning, more responsive suspension settings and cosmetic upgrades for a sportier road focus.
• MC Stradale — a lighter, track-oriented version with aerodynamic, braking and interior changes to reduce weight and increase performance.
• GranCabrio — an open-top convertible derivative that retained the coupé's mechanical layout with a fabric roof and revised body structure.
• Limited editions — factory and coachbuilt specials produced in small numbers with unique trims, paint and performance tweaks prized by collectors.

Interior and usability

The cabin typically features high-quality leather and trim, supportive sport seats and a practical 2+2 arrangement; rear seats are compact but serviceable for short trips. Over time infotainment, driver aids and materials were updated to modernize the experience while preserving a handcrafted ambience that reflects Maserati's luxury GT intentions.

History and legacy

As a grand tourer the GranTurismo earned a reputation for evocative sound, presence and comfortable long-distance performance. It helped define Maserati's modern image by pairing Italian design with V8 character and remains notable among enthusiasts for its distinctive combination of style, luxury and driving engagement. Later developments in the marque have moved toward new powertrain technologies and architectures, but the GranTurismo continues to be recognized for its role as a traditional front-engine GT.
