Overview

Marksistskaya is a station on the Moscow Metro, located on the Kalininskaya Line. The station lies in the Taganka area of central Moscow and provides an important interchange point for passengers travelling across the eastern sections of the city. It opened to the public on 30 December 1979 and has been part of the network's late‑Soviet development of deep-level transfers.

Design and layout

The station is constructed at considerable depth, approximately 60 metres below ground level. It occupies a deep-level layout typical of Moscow's transfer stations from the period: a single platform area serving two tracks and underground transfer corridors that link to neighbouring stations on other lines. The passenger route is oriented toward a single surface exit and a transfer node that leads to adjacent pylon and circle-line stations.

History and development

Marksistskaya was opened as part of the Kalininskaya Line extension of the late 1970s, intended to improve east–west connectivity. Its name derives from the adjacent Marksistskaya Street, which reflects the historical prominence of Marxist institutions and toponymy in the area. The station's opening contributed to the growth of transfer options in the Taganka district and eased congestion at nearby interchange points.

Connections and access

  • Line position: located between Tretyakovskaya and Ploshchad Ilyicha stations on the Kalininskaya Line.
  • Transfers: connected by pedestrian passages to the Taganskaya interchange complex (including the Koltsevaya/circle station and the radial Taganskaya station), allowing cross-line transfers.
  • Entrances: there is one main surface exit that opens onto Marksistskaya Street; local directions sometimes refer to the approach as Taganskaya when crossing the street toward the square.

Usage and notable facts

Marksistskaya functions principally as a transfer and commuter station rather than a major destination in its own right. Its deep placement and direct transfer links make it a frequent choice for passengers moving between radial and circle routes. The station exemplifies the Moscow Metro practice of integrating deep-level stations with multi-line transfer complexes to maximize network connectivity.

Practical information

Passengers using Marksistskaya should allow additional time for vertical circulation because of its depth, especially when making transfers. For more general information about the system and line, see the Moscow Metro overview and the Kalininskaya Line page.
