Lloyd Bochner (July 29, 1924 – October 29, 2005) was a Canadian actor whose long career spanned stage, radio, film, television and voice work. He became known to international audiences for a leading role in the 1960s television series Hong Kong and later for voice acting in popular animation. Bochner worked in both Canadian and American productions and remained active for several decades.
Early life and career beginnings
Bochner was born in Toronto, Ontario, and began his professional life in Canadian entertainment before moving into international film and television. Over time he took roles across multiple media, establishing himself as a reliable character actor who could play polished professionals, officials and sophisticated villains. His career reflected the opportunities available to Canadian performers in the mid-20th century as television and film expanded north and south of the border.
Screen and voice work
On television, Bochner is best remembered for portraying Chief Inspector Neil Campbell in the adventure series Hong Kong, a role that brought him wide recognition. He also made numerous guest appearances on popular American series, including dramatic and science-fiction programs of the era. Later in his career he reached new audiences as a voice actor: he supplied the voice of Gotham City's Mayor Hamilton Hill in Batman: The Animated Series and continued the role in The New Batman Adventures.
Style, reputation and legacy
Colleagues and critics often noted Bochner's urbane screen presence and his facility with both dramatic and lighter material. His ability to move between stage and screen, and between live-action and animation, illustrated a versatility prized in working actors. In 2004 he received recognition from ACTRA, a reflection of his standing within the Canadian acting community late in life.
Bochner's body of work is used as an example of a mid-20th-century Canadian performer who built a sustained career across borders and formats. For students of television history, his career shows how character actors contributed to both genre series and prestige dramas.
