Liu Zhenhua (Chinese: 劉振華; July 1921 – 11 July 2018) was a senior officer of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and a Communist Party official who later served as an ambassador. Born in Tai'an, Shandong, he joined the Communist Party of China in 1938 and spent much of his life in military and political service.
Military service and wartime experience
Liu's early career was shaped by three major conflicts of mid-20th-century East Asia. He fought during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945), took part in campaigns of the Chinese Civil War (against Nationalist forces), and later served in the Korean War (1950–1953) as part of the People's Volunteer Army. These experiences established his reputation as a career officer within the People's Liberation Army.
Rank, promotions and positions
In 1964 Liu was promoted to the rank of major general (shaojiang), a sign of senior command responsibility during a period when formal rank systems were significant in the PLA. Over the course of his career he held a sequence of military and administrative posts and eventually attained senior officer status recognized in later accounts.
Political and diplomatic roles
Beyond battlefield service, Liu took on political duties. He was a member of the 9th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and served as a delegate to the 8th National People's Congress (NPC), reflecting a role at the intersection of military and party leadership. From 1971 to 1976 he represented the People’s Republic of China abroad as Ambassador to Albania (1971–1976), a position combining diplomacy with political oversight during a complex period of Sino-Albanian relations.
Later life and legacy
After decades of service Liu remained a noted figure within military and party circles. His career illustrates the path of many PLA officers who moved between combat commands, political office and foreign service. He died in Beijing on 11 July 2018 at the age of 97 (Beijing), leaving a record tied to the major military and diplomatic events of modern China.
