Lindy Ruff (born February 17, 1960) is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach who serves as the head coach of the New Jersey Devils. He has held several head-coaching positions in the NHL over a multi-decade career, including long tenures with the Buffalo Sabres and later the Dallas Stars.
Early life and playing days
Ruff was born in Alberta and spent his early years involved in junior and minor professional hockey as a defenseman. After finishing his playing career he moved into coaching, beginning at lower levels before advancing to roles in the NHL organization ranks.
Coaching career
Ruff became the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres in 1997 and led that franchise for more than a decade, developing a reputation for structured systems and steady regular-season results. After leaving Buffalo in 2013 he served as head coach of the Dallas Stars and held other NHL coaching positions before being appointed head coach of the New Jersey Devils in 2023.
