Overview
Lille is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp, situated in the Campine (Kempen) region in the north of the country. It lies at approximately 51°14′N, 4°49′E. The municipality includes the villages of Lille, Gierle, Poederlee and Wechelderzande and had a population of about 15,600 people in 2007. Geography and environment
Lille occupies a partly sandy, partly wooded landscape typical of the Campine: heath, coniferous stands and patches of mixed forest. The area is used for mixed agriculture, small-scale forestry and outdoor recreation. The environment supports walking and cycling routes and local nature reserves managed at municipal and provincial levels; more information can be found through the provincial pages such as Antwerp province and regional resources at Campine region.
History and development
The communities that now form the municipality developed as small agricultural and artisan settlements. Over recent decades Lille has maintained a rural character while becoming part of a broader commuter zone for larger cities in Antwerp province. Historic buildings include parish churches and farmhouses that reflect local building traditions.
Economy, culture and recreation
The local economy combines agriculture, small businesses and services. Lille is also known for leisure facilities: a prominent attraction is the Lilse Bergen holiday and recreation park, which offers water activities, camping and seasonal events. Local cultural life features community festivals, markets and sports clubs centered in the villages.
Landmarks and transport
Landmarks are modest and largely rural: village churches, manor houses and landscape features. Road links connect Lille to nearby towns and to larger transport corridors in Antwerp province. Public transport is available but less frequent than in urban centres, so many residents rely on cars for commuting.
