Notable posts included heading the poetry section of the newspaper Literatūra un Māksla (1986–1987) and serving as Editor-in-Chief for the cultural journal Jaunās Grāmatas and the culturological magazine Grāmata (1990–1992). In 1993 he became Editor-in-Chief of Vārds, the magazine of the Latvian Writers' Union.

Briedis was a member of the Latvian Writers' Union from 1974 and served several times on its board, making him an active participant in the institutional life of Latvian literature. From 1987 he was also connected to the international writers' organisation PEN; between 1993 and 1997 he served as Vice‑President of the Latvian PEN Club. These affiliations underscored his involvement in freedom of expression issues and in building contacts between Latvian writers and the international literary community.
