The league was established in the years following Armenia’s independence in the early 1990s, replacing the regional arrangements that existed during the Soviet era. Performance in the Armenian Premier League determines qualification for UEFA club competitions. The champion typically enters the early qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League, while other high-placed teams may enter qualifying stages of UEFA’s secondary competitions.
