Arrows Grand Prix International (Formula One team)

History and development

The team began competing in the late 1970s, entering Grand Prix events with cars it designed and ran under its own name. Across the 1980s and 1990s Arrows adapted to evolving technical regulations, worked with a succession of engine suppliers and employed many different designers and drivers. In the early 1990s a tie-up with a Japanese concern led to the prominent Footwork branding for several seasons before the Arrows name was restored.

Characteristics and operations

As a privateer constructor, Arrows built and fielded its own chassis and managed the logistics, engineering and race operations typical of a Formula One team. The organisation frequently changed technical partners and power units to remain competitive. Like other smaller teams it balanced limited budgets against the need to develop new aerodynamic and mechanical concepts each season.

Significance and legacy

Arrows is remembered as one of the longer-lived independent entrants in modern Formula One. Although the team operated through many seasons it did not win a World Championship or record a Grand Prix victory; nevertheless it occasionally challenged more established teams and provided a platform for drivers and engineers to gain experience at the top level.
