Lech Raczak: Polish theatre director, educator and festival curator

Early activity and collective work

Raczak was one of the founders of the Theatre of the Eighth Day, an ensemble known for collective creation, political engagement and performances that often blurred the boundaries between stage and public space. The collective approach favoured by Raczak emphasised collaboration, non‑hierarchical authorship and a responsiveness to social issues of the moment.

Festival leadership and institutional roles

From the early 1990s Raczak expanded his activity into festival programming and institutional leadership. He served as artistic director of the Malta Festival between 1993 and 2012, shaping it into a multi‑disciplinary event that brought international artists to Poznań and encouraged site‑specific, cross‑genre projects. He was also artistic director of the Polish Theatre in Poznań from 1995 to 1998, a period in which he promoted adventurous staging and collaborative processes within a repertory institution.

Teaching and mentorship

From 2003 Raczak held a professorship at the University of Arts in Poznań, where he taught theatre practice and directed workshops. His work as a teacher emphasised ensemble work, the use of the body and sound in performance, and a civic understanding of the artist's role. Graduates and younger practitioners remember him for practical mentorship and for fostering experimental approaches.

Artistic approach and themes

Raczak's productions are commonly described as experimental, interdisciplinary and socially attentive. He combined visual and musical elements with physical performance and text, frequently employing public settings and non‑traditional scenography. His projects often addressed political and social questions through a mixture of satire, ritual and direct audience engagement.

Legacy

Raczak is remembered for helping to shape Poland's alternative theatre scene and for developing festival formats that linked local practice with international trends. He influenced generations of theatre makers as an ensemble leader, curator and professor. Lech Raczak died of a heart attack on 17 January 2020 in Poznań at the age of 73; his work continues to be discussed in contemporary theatre studies and regional cultural histories.
