Armando Nieto Vélez — Peruvian Jesuit Priest and Historian

Early life and ordination

Nieto entered the Society of Jesus and pursued studies that combined theology and the humanities, a common path for Jesuit scholars. He was ordained a priest of the Society of Jesus on August 28, 1964, in the Frankfurt am Main Cathedral. His formation as a priest informed both his teaching and his approach to historical questions, emphasizing careful archival work and contextual interpretation.

Academic career

Nieto was a longtime professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, where he taught courses in history and mentored students in research methods. His academic work addressed Peruvian history, including aspects of colonial and republican development and the historiography of the nation. He also published studies and essays intended for both specialists and a broader audience interested in Peru's past.

Institutional leadership

Throughout his career Nieto held several important leadership positions in Peruvian cultural life. These included:

• Director of the Riva-Agüero Institute, a humanities research center associated with the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru
• Director of the Peruvian Center of Historic-Military Studies, which focuses on military aspects of national history
• President of the National Academy of History, the country's principal scholarly body devoted to historical research

Death

Armando Nieto died on March 27, 2017, in Lima of complications from pneumonia, at the age of 85. Tributes at the time of his death noted both his scholarly output and his service to Peru's academic and cultural communities.
